Translational science is a relatively new and quickly growing discipline. Its purpose is to study and improve the complex process of how observations are turned into interventions to improve population health. The purpose of my research is to understand and quantify factors that contribute to failed versus successful translation of new interventions from preclinical models to humans and to develop statistical tools to aid in translational decision-making, with the goal of improving the translational success rate. My methodological interests related to this work are in optimizing analysis of small-sample and repeated measures preclinical data, novel adaptive trial designs for early stage clinical trials, mixed (quantitative and qualitative) methods research for understanding complex systems, and prediction modeling for decision support.
